Cursive writing
We are teaching cursive writing throughout the school, from Junior Infants right up to the Senior Classes. Learning to write in cursive style from the beginning of school is though to be beneficial in the following ways:
Each child in the class is following a hand-writing book in class to learn to write the letters in the cursive style. I have provided each child with a small laminated card showing them how to write each letter in the cursive style that they may bring home with them each day. Please encourage your child to use this card and to write in the cursive style when doing their homework or when engaging in other writing.
- When mark making most young children scribble in a similar way to joined writing so it is a natural progression for them
- Children tend to see the words as wholes rather than separate letters that need to be put together, this helps their spelling particularly of non-phonetic (tricky) words
- Leaving out spaces between words is a common problem as children learn to write, very few children who learn to write cursively forget the spaces
- Children develop a more fluid writing speed when using cursive writing
